What does Jonathan’s usual day look like?

Despite his age, blindness from cataracts and lack of smell, Jonathan thrives in luxury at Plantation House, the governor’s residence. His regular days include sunbathing, leisurely strolls, and interactions with companions like Emma and Fred, another tortoise pair gifted alongside him long ago.He is not an ordinary shellback; he’s met royalty, from Queen Elizabeth II to Prince Edward, and has even been featured on local stamps.

Jonathan’s daily life and care

Jonathan gets top-notch care; his team feeds him by hand about three times a week to ensure he gets every bite, since he can’t spot or sniff out food on the ground. This routine keeps his sharp beak healthy and helps digestion, with portions chopped just right for his age.

So, what are Jonathan’s favourite foods?

His meals are a combination of fresh, seasonal picks suited to his needs: cabbage, lettuce hearts, cucumbers, apples, carrots, guava, and plenty of locally grown fruits.Bananas are his absolute favorites, and he eats them eagerly, though they sometimes stick in his mouth, needing a quick wipe with lettuce or carrot.According to veterinarian Joe Hollins, as shared with Guinness World Records, “He loves banana, but it tends to gum up his mouth. Lettuce hearts, though not very nutritious, are a favourite.” Earlier, Jonathan grazed on grass and twigs, but vet Hollins upgraded his menu around 2014 with nutrient-packed veggies and fruits like carrots, cucumbers, bananas, and guava to revive his strength. This change in his diet helped him boost his vitamins, minerals, and energy levels, helping his beak sharpen up again. Hollins monitors him closely, visiting weekly for these feasts.

He remains energetic despite his age!

Even at nearly 194, Jonathan stays spry, enjoying sunbaths and shade on hot days. He keeps a strong romantic side. “In spite of his age, Jonathan still has a good libido and is seen frequently to mate with Emma and sometimes Fred,” Joe Hollins told Guinness World Records.
