When you think of a Colleen Hoover adaptation, you wonder if you are going to be put through an emotional wringer, and frankly it is too hot to go through anything like that, even with the promise of a three-course wine dinner boasting a menu inspired by the Italian south at the end of it.
Reminders of Him (English)
Director: Vanessa Caswill
Starring: Maika Monroe, Tyriq Withers, Rudy Pankow, Lainey Wilson, Lauren Graham, Bradley Whitford
Storyline: A woman comes out of prison and tries to reconnect with her daughter, a move, which no one in the town seems to look at favourably
Runtime: 114 minutes
However, Reminders of Him,based on Hoover’s 2022 novel of the same name, is actually quite sweet and does not make you question your life choices. It features Maika Monroe as Kenna, who is released after seven years in prison. She returns to her hometown and tries to get her life back.
As she tries to find a job (any job) and gets a crummy place to stay, where her landlady Ruth (Jennifer Robertson), tells her to take a kitten to get a discount on her rent, we learn that Kenna went to prison for manslaughter for a car accident that killed her boyfriend, Scotty (Rudy Pankow).

In prison, Kenna delivers a child, a baby girl, who is being brought up by Scotty’s parents, Grace (Lauren Graham) and Patrick (Bradley Whitford). Scotty’s best friend, a former NFL player who now runs a bar, Ledger (Tyriq Withers), is close to Grace, Patrick and their granddaughter, Kenna and Scotty’s little girl, Diem (Zoe Kosovic). While Grace and Patrick hold Kenna responsible for their son’s death, Ledger finds himself drawn to the broken, desperate mother.

Monroe invests a bruising tenderness to Kenna while Ledger efficiently manages to look good and sensitive. Kosovic is awfully cute, as is to be expected in these kinds of romances. The little town of Laramie, Wyoming, is charming with majestic mountains, lakes, woodland, winding roads and lovely houses. It seems the kind of place where nothing too bad happens.
The screenplay by Hoover and Lauren Levine veers slightly towards soap-operatic melodrama, but we are willing to overlook that for the crackling chemistry between the leads, the cute-as-a-button little girl, the soaring soundtrack and the lovely scenery.
And in these fraught times, we could definitely do with the assurance of beautiful people finding their happy endings in lovely homes with stunning views.
And yes, the Italian dinner was marvelous, with the burrata being the chef’s kiss.
