Karthik Subbaraj has teamed up with music maestro Ilaiyaraaja for his upcoming directorial. The Tamil filmmaker’s 10th movie as a director will mark the legendary music director’s 1540th project.
In November 2025, Karthik Subbaraj had announced his next after Retro. The movie will be backed by Sikhya Entertainment, helmed by the Oscar-winning producer Guneet Monga Kapoor.
In a special video on May 18, 2026, Karthik announced that the movie will have music from Ilaiyaraaja. The video begins with titles of Karthik’s works, from Pizza to Retro, with several evergreen numbers of Ilaiyaraaja running in the background.
“From growing up with his music to working with him,” reads the caption in the video. The video also shows candid moments of Ilaiyaaraja recording music for the project in the presence of Karthik.
The untitled project will be produced by Guneet and co-produced by Achin Jain. Sikhya Entertainment is the studio behind the the Oscar-winning short The Elephant Whisperers, The Lunchbox, Masaan, Pagglait and the National Award-winning Kathal.

Karthik had said in multiple interviews that his next will be an independent movie with fresh faces. The project will first be sent to reputed festivals before hitting theatres.
Meanwhile, Ilaiyaraaja recently completed 50 years in the Indian film music industry. The golden jubilee of the Tamil movie Annakili marked five decades of Ilaiyaraaja’s journey in cinema.
